Peterborough et Ely furent les deux grands monastères des plaines marécageuses. Le monastère saxon bâti avant la conquête normande, vers 655, fut mis à sac par les Danois en 870. Une seconde église saxonne, érigée au 10e s. comme abbatiale bénédictine, fut détruite par le feu en 1116. L'actuelle cathédrale fut reconstruite entre 1118 et 1238. Derrière la façade principale de style gothique Early English, se cache un intérieur superbe, exemple d'architecture romane.
